Martin Odegaard: Zidane and the club wanted me back

Odegaard-vs-Real-Sociedad

Martin Odegaard has claimed there was no fallout between himself and Real Sociedad following his decision to return to Real Madrid this summer.

The player has had a good start to life at the club and has revealed he is already adapting to the demands of the Spanish giants.

Odegaard has featured in three of Madrid’s four league games with two of them being from the start while another appearance has seen him come from the bench. The midfielder has however been called up his country for the international break ahead of their games against Serbia, Romania and Northern Ireland this month.

And the 23-year-old has recalled his time on loan in San Sebastian. “It was first thought that I’d spend two years at Real Sociedad, but Madrid called to say they wanted me to return,” Odegaard told the Norwegian media. “It was a natural thing and was resolved quickly.

“There was no drama. There wasn’t a falling-out. I’ve always had the objective and dream of playing there.”

Madrid ended the summer transfer window without making any addition to their squad despite quite a number of departures. And the arrival of Odegaard is likely to be a huge boost for manager Zinedine Zidane considering the player’s impact in the last two seasons.

“I spoke to Zidane, yes,” Odegaard added. “Both he and the club wanted me back and that’s how it turned out.

“There wasn’t a tense discussion with La Real. Madrid made it clear that they wanted me and I always had it as my goal and my dream [to play for them]. They wanted it and we did it.”

The player also revealed he is willing to slot into any position the manager tells him to play at the club.

“We actually haven’t spoken much about my position,” Odegaard admitted. “I can play in various different roles, whether in the middle of the park or more as a No.10 – where I played when there were two strikers.

“I can play in different systems. I’ll play where Zidane wants and, if I get the opportunity, it matters very little to me where I play.”
