It is surprising to note that in the last three years, Borja Mayoral has had to enjoy loan spells away from the Santiago Bernabeu.
The forward has had spells with Levante and currently AS Roma in an attempt to keep playing regular football.
Since graduating into the senior team from the Castilla side in 2016, Borja Mayoral has only had one full season with the senior squad, which was during the 2017/18 campaign. The rest has been occupied with shorts stints in Germany, Spain, and now Italy.
For a player who has always played to his maximum best when given an opportunity, the decision to be sending out on loan seems to be quite a hasty one, knowing that attacking players have struggled in front of goal in recent times.
Having given Mayoral a senior debut in 2016, Zinedine Zidane has never had trust for the Spain international, and even after five years, he still ponders over his quality.
Borja Mayoral was a good signing last year for Levante, scoring eight goals in 24 league starts for them. And if his early signals at Roma are anything to go by, the forward is really becoming a prolific striker as was the case during his time with Madrid’s junior team.
The striker’s performances in the last one-and-half years have seen his market value shoot up by seven million Euros in the last seven months – evidence of his consistent day-to-day delivery on the football pitch.
He has found the back of the net on six different occasions for Paulo Fonseca’s side across all competitions already and we are only in January. He is also expected to stay in Rome for another year before a decision is made on his future.
With Zidane still in the dugouts at the Bernabeu, it is unlikely that Mayoral will have a long-term future as a Los Blancos player, with Luka Jovic also expected to return from his loan spell in the summer.
Mayoral might have raised the bar at Madrid in some years gone with his winnings, but Zidane is touted as a partial manager for his desire to pick players based on relations rather than quality. This is not the first time these mistakes are popping up as a number of players have had to go away from the club for the above-mentioned reason.
And at the rate at which the manager still continues to take the same path, the club could be about to see the end of some of its highly-rated youngsters.
