A dive into Real Madrid’s 2021 summer transfer window

As for the incomings, The Whites from Madrid got their hands on the versatile defender David Alaba from Bayern Munich in the opening weeks of the transfer window, and a highly talented young midfielder, Eduardo Camavinga from Rennes on deadline day. Both the signings bring a lot of value to the squad.

The 29-year-old Austrian captain had a brilliant start to his career at Los Blancos, and his arrival has unquestionably strengthened the defence for Carlo Ancelloti’s men after the departure of the long-serving defender and club captain Sergio Ramos and the Frenchman Raphael Varane.

Eduardo Camavinga, on the other hand, has shown immense qualities at Rennes in Ligue 1. He has a sensational tackling record and is moreover good at finding passes to breakthrough lines. The Frenchman will fit in the midfield for Real Madrid without any doubt, having demonstrated his class in the French League at such a young age.

Aside from Alaba and Camavinga signing, Santiago Bernabéu saw a couple of returning loanees.

Dani Ceballos is back at the club after completing his loan spell at Arsenal. Ceballos made 25 appearances for the Gunners but never really got going in the 2020-2021 season at Emirates. Gareth Bale also joined the team again after spending a season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur.

Florentino Perez failed to land the long-term target of Real Madrid Kylian Mbappe, who was very close to joining the club this summer. The Frenchman was devastated after the move collapsed between the clubs but is expected to play in the Spanish Capital sometime soon. 

As for the outgoings, Los Blancos cashed in on the transfer of their defender Raphael Varane and the Norweigian captain Martin Odegaard. The Frenchman was sold to the Premier League side Manchester United for 34 million pounds and, Arsenal signed their target for 35 million pounds.

Brahim Diaz will spend another year at AC Milan and Takefuso Kubo rejoined Mallorca on a season-long loan. Whereas, right-back Alvaro Odriozola has also been sent on loan at the Italian club Fiorentina. The club captain completed his transfer move to the Paris Saint-Germain for free after his contract with Los Blancos expired.

Madrid also extended the contract of their players, with the Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde extending his stay at the club till 2027, while Courtois extended his contract till 2026. Both Karim Benzema and Luka Modric agreed to a one-year extension of their contracts. The Brazilian midfielder Casemiro also extended his stay at the club till 2025.
