Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has charged the club’s defenders to work on their shortcomings following the 5-2 win against Celta Vigo on Sunday night.

Madrid beat Eduardo Coudet’s side courtesy of goals from Karim Benzema, Vinicius Junior, and a debut goal for Eduardo Camavinga.

However, the defensive performance of the Los Blancos were again far from their very best as they shipped in yet another two goals.

But for Thibaut Courtois, Madrid could have conceded another three goals as Celta fired shots at the shot-stopper throughout the game.

Including today’s game, Madrid have conceded a total of six league goals from just four games, a situation that seems to be a worry for the gaffer.

Ancelotti has however asked his players for an improving performance at the back in order to ensure they concede fewer goals in the coming games.

Speaking in his press conference after the game, the Italian said: “We showed our quality in attack, but we have to improve and balance defense and attack, so that the matches do not get complicated.”

“We were missing [David] Alaba and [Ferland] Mendy, but we need to help ourselves more in defence.”

Ancelotti was forced to make one change to his back four following the injury to David Alaba prior to Sunday’s game.

Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, Nacho Fernandez and Miguel Gutierrez were the preferred options for the backline as Madrid named their lineup for the game.

Miguel looked a bit shaky in the first half of the game as he left behind spaces with his recovering also questionable but an improved second-half performance saw the club limit the chance of the away side, going home with all three points as they bounced back from a 2-1 deficit in the opening half.

Ancelotti’s quest is a wake-up call for Real Madrid, who play Inter Milan next in their opening fixture of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League.
