Real Madrid kicked off their 2021/22 UEFA Champions League campaign with an unconvincing 1-0 win over Inter Milan on Wednesday night.
The game saw Rodrygo Goes come from the bench to score late in the game as Madrid came from the San Siro with all three points.
Inter looked threatening from the very start of the game, attacking the Los Blancos from all angles but were on able to convert any of their chances.
For the first time since the 2005-06 season, Madrid faced 14 shots in the opening half of a Champions League game with four being on target.
Thibaut Courtois proved to be the main man for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, making some vital saves to deny Simeone Inzaghi’s men on the night.
Real Madrid barely had time to stay on the ball as they were constantly pressed by the Serie A side and despite managing five shots in the first half, none was on target.
Madrid came back into the second half a much better side compared to the opening 45 minutes as they had the majority of the ball and were looking dangerous all the time in the final third of the pitch.
Eder Militao saw his header from a Luka Modric corner go just wide of the post while Dani Carvajal’s effort from the penalty box was punched away by Samir Handanovic.
Rodrygo and Eduardo Camavinga were introduced into the game in the 65th and 80th minutes respectively and it was the two substitutes who combined pretty well to score the winner.
The Brazilian volleyed a lofted pass from the Frenchman into the net to open the scoring in the 89th minute of the game, as Madrid sealed all three points in their opener.
