UCL: 5 wins, 1 loss – Real Madrid’s way to knockout stage qualification

Real Madrid secured their qualification into the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League two weeks ago but on Wednesday night, the Spanish side beat Inter Milan to finish top of their group.

Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio scored at the Santiago Bernabeu to ensure a top spot for the Los Blancos.

Madrid was put in Group D, where they had Sheriff Tiraspol and Shakhtar Donetsk alongside Inter in the group. Carlo Ancelotti’s side kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win over Inter at the San Siro, with Rodrygo Goes scoring an 89th-minute winner.

That result was followed up with a shocking defeat to Sheriff at home – leading to another defeat to Espanyol in the Spanish league. Those two defeats sparked a reaction from the manager and look to have found his permanent starting lineup for the rest of the season.

Madrid’s third league game in the European competition was a 5-0 drubbing of Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.

A brace from Vinicius Junior and goals from Rodrygo and Karim Benzema added to the own goal by Serhiy Kryvtsov as Madrid run a riot against Shakhtar.

The reverse fixture in matchday four was also a win for Ancelotti’s side as Benzema scored a brace at the Bernabeu.

Traveling to Moldova to face Sheriff, it was all about securing qualification for the next round, and that was exactly what the Spanish outfit did. David Alaba, Kroos, and Benzema, this time were on the scoresheet as the Los Blancos recorded a deserving 3-0 win over their opposition.

Madrid wrapped up the group stage games with another win over Inter, cementing their position as group leaders with Inter coming in second.
