What does the future hold for the legendary maestros holding the midfield of Real Madrid for almost a decade? – Luka Modric and Toni Kroos

Luka Modric and Toni Kroos who have been playing for Real Madrid for quite some time, are slowly giving in to their age and although they still are playing in the starting lineup and still show their prowess and the absence is felt each time they are not in the squad.

But with the uprising of young talents like Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni, it would be really difficult for experienced leaders like Modric and Kroos to hold their position and keep delivering like they have been doing at the highest stage of world football.

Let us take a brief look at how things would look like if Camavinga and Tchouameni keep their development at this steady pace:

Toni Kroos who had professionally retired from international football last year,  and has been still showing a good impact upon the playing style of the entire squad of Real Madrid while mostly standing down at the centre of the park.

Despite starting his own new venture “Kroos Academy”, he’s still making it his top priority to stay in shape and help the team as much as he can. Regulating the pace of the game is where his expertise lies.

His absence was really felt in some of the UCL matchups this season and one thing is certain neither Tchouameni and Camavinga have the type of skills Kroos has. It might be wise to renew Kroos’ contract as he still has a lot to offer to the team both as a player and a mentor.

Unlike Toni Kroos, Modric is still leading his national team. So, he is still playing at a stage and that too so many intense games which many players can’t at 26 years of age let alone be 36.

Modric plays a much more delicate outfield role than Kroos. Acting as a box-to-box midfielder, he not only links up the entire midfield, but also helps the ball travel from the back line to the front 3.

Camavinga as we can see is slowly moulding into the role of a box-to-box midfielder. And he can slowly take the role of Modric in the later years but there seems to be no scope of his taking over Modric right now.

Renewing Modric might seem to be not a long-lasting solution but with the form he is currently in and the kind of games he is delivering it would be wise to give him another year of the contract.
