Real Madrid registered a win upon their return to the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday night after beating Celta Vigo.
Madrid last played at the Bernabeu in March 2020 against Barcelona due to plans to renovate the stadium into an ultra-modern one.
The home side managed a 5-2 thumping of Celta in their first home league game, with Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior running the show.
The Frenchman scored three goals while the Brazilian youngster dazzled his way in and out of the Celta defence in an incredible second-half performance.
Madrid conceded their earliest goal at the Santiago Bernabeu in all competitions in the fourth minute, when Santi Mina capitalised on a defensive error to give Celta the lead, with Madrid’s defensive shortcoming being evident once again.
Benzema leveled things for Carlo Ancelotti’s side 20 minutes later, striking the ball past Matias Dituro after a well-timed pull-back from Federico Valverde but Franco Cervi finished from close range after Thibaut Courtois’ initial save to restore the away side’s lead before the half-time break.
Celta head coach, Eduardo Coudet made one change at half-time with Fran Beltran replacing Renato Tapia but it was Benzema who once again got his side leveled shortly after the restart, heading home Miguel Gutierrez’s cross into the net for his second on the night.
Eight minutes later, the Madrid No.9 turned the provider to give his side the lead – playing through Vinicius, who with time and pace on his side curled his effort into the right bottom corner to make it 3-2.
Named among the substitutes, Ancelotti introduced new signing Eduardo Camavinga into the game – the player needing just six minutes to have a dream debut as he tapped into the net from close range, after Luka Modric’s effort was pushed away by the Celta Vigo shot-stopper.
Benzema’s third goal came from the penalty spot after Vinicius was brought down in the box, the Frenchman making no mistake as he grabbed his first match ball of the season.
The win sees Madrid go top of the league table with 10 points from four games, same as Atletico Madrid and Valencia, who are the Los Blancos, next league opponent.
