Real Madrid kicked off their 2021 as they mean to bounce back to winning ways, beating Celta Vigo by two goals to nil in the Spanish League.

Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio combined for both goals at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium as the home side took charge of the first position for the time being.

Zinedine Zidane was forced to make two changes to the starting line up that played a 1-1 draw with Elche in midweek, with Ferland Mendy and Nacho Fernandez coming in for Marcelo and Sergio Ramos respectively.

Vazquez opened the scoring for Madrid in the sixth minute, rising the highest to power home Asensio’s cross to give Zidane’s men a flying start.

The favour was later returned by Vazquez, who turned the provider this time – assisting Asensio to double the Los Blancos’ lead shortly after the recess.

Madrid played a purposeful game on the night, dominating possession and creating majority of the game’s chances despite Celta trying to intimidate them.

Eduardo Coudet and his team came into this game at the back of a seven game unbeaten run in all competitions and 10 points behind Madrid but their strong form was put to a halt by the current defending champions of La Liga who have now gone to the top of the table with Atletico Madrid yet to play.

The only loss from the game is the fact that Daniel Carvajal is set to miss Madrid’s next league game, against Osasuna after picking up a yellow card while walking off the pitch in the second 45 minutes.
